When choosing an ABA therapy provider, the qualifications and training of the clinical team matter. At VBA California, we take pride in employing highly trained professionals who are not only credentialed but also committed to delivering the highest standard of care to every child and family we serve. Understanding the credentials, roles, and training processes of our therapists can help parents feel confident in their choice of provider.
Who Provides ABA Therapy?
ABA therapy is a team-based approach that includes various professionals who work collaboratively to design and implement effective behavior intervention plans. At VBA California, our therapy teams typically consist of:
- Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs)
- Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs)
- Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs)
- Behavior Technicians (BTs)
Each team member plays a unique and essential role in ensuring that your child receives evidence-based, personalized care that meets their developmental goals.
Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs)
BCBAs are graduate-level professionals who hold a certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). They are responsible for overseeing the entire treatment process, including assessment, program development, team supervision, and outcome monitoring. Requirements for becoming a BCBA include:
- A master’s degree in behavior analysis, education, psychology, or a related field
- Completion of approved coursework in behavior analysis
- Supervised fieldwork hours (typically 1,500–2,000 hours)
- Passing the national BCBA certification exam
BCBAs at VBA California are not only board-certified, but also bring extensive clinical experience and a passion for helping children with autism achieve meaningful progress.
Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs)
BCaBAs are bachelor’s-level professionals who work under the supervision of a BCBA. They support program implementation, data analysis, and staff training. Requirements for becoming a BCaBA include:
- A bachelor’s degree
- Completion of approved coursework in behavior analysis
- Supervised fieldwork
- Passing the BCaBA certification exam
While not every therapy team includes a BCaBA, those who are part of VBA California’s staff play a valuable role in extending the reach and oversight of our clinical programs.
Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs)
RBTs are paraprofessionals certified by the BACB to deliver direct ABA therapy under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. Their work is hands-on, implementing behavior plans, collecting data, and teaching daily living, communication, and social skills. To become an RBT, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete a 40-hour training program that meets BACB standards
- Pass a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA
- Successfully pass the RBT certification exam
- Pass a background check and comply with ongoing supervision requirements
At VBA California, RBTs are selected based on both their clinical potential and their ability to build strong, compassionate relationships with children and families. Each RBT receives continuous training and feedback to ensure quality service delivery.
Behavior Technicians (BTs)
In some cases, therapy may be provided by Behavior Technicians who are not yet certified as RBTs but are undergoing training and working toward certification. All BTs at VBA California receive extensive onboarding and are closely supervised to ensure they adhere to our high standards of care. Many of our BTs are in school to become future RBTs, BCBAs, or educators, and we are proud to support their professional development.
Ongoing Training and Professional Development
At VBA California, our commitment to excellence doesn’t stop at certification. All members of our therapy teams participate in ongoing training to ensure they stay up to date with the latest research, techniques, and ethical standards in behavior analysis. This includes:
- Regular in-service training sessions
- Continuing education workshops
- Hands-on supervision and performance evaluations
- Access to professional development resources
Our internal training programs are designed to foster continuous improvement, enhance clinical skills, and reinforce our mission of delivering compassionate, effective care to every child we serve.
Supervision and Quality Assurance
Quality assurance is a core pillar of our service model. BCBAs at VBA California provide regular supervision of RBTs and BTs through direct observation, team meetings, data reviews, and coaching. This layered supervision model ensures that treatment fidelity remains high and that each therapist is well-supported in their role.
We also engage in routine internal audits and peer reviews to maintain compliance with ethical and professional standards. These practices help us deliver consistent, measurable outcomes for the families we serve.
Why Therapist Credentials Matter
The credentials and training of ABA professionals directly impact the quality of care your child receives. Proper training ensures that interventions are implemented correctly, that progress is accurately measured, and that therapy is both effective and ethical. At VBA California, our families can trust that every member of their child’s therapy team has met rigorous standards and is committed to making a positive difference.
