What is Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy?
ABA or Applied Behavior Analysis therapy was developed by psychologists and researchers over several decades during the twentieth century. It is a scientifically-researched approach based on the principles of behavioral change strategies and pays special attention to the patient’s behavior and their environment. Applied behavior analysis therapy has been successfully used to improve specific behavior skills, particularly social and communication abilities, in children and adults with autism and developmental issues. ABA therapy can also be utilized to increase adaptive learning competency, fine and gross motor skills, verbal expression, and self-regulation abilities.
Applied Behavior Analysis Process
The first step in developing an applied behavior analysis therapy treatment plan is a comprehensive assessment. Our BCBA Case Manager will conduct a detailed, one-on-one analysis of each child. The assessment includes:
- Functional behavior evaluation
- Home observation
- Parent/caregiver interviews
- Developmental skill assessment
Who Can Benefit from Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy?
At VBA, we specialize in working with a wide range of children and young people across Southern California. Most of our clients are impacted by autism or other developmental disabilities. We serve clients of all ages, demographics, and levels of need. Many of our clients are referred to us by public programs, but we also work with private clients. We serve San Diego, Orange, and Riverside County, and partner with schools, hospitals, health care organizations, non-profits, and private individuals. The best way to determine if your child is a good candidate for applied behavior analysis therapy is to contact us to schedule an evaluation.
What Success Looks Like
Since autism and other developmental disabilities affect clients in different ways, there is no set outcome for applied behavior analysis therapy. However, in general, the goals generally include improving communication and social skills. For some clients, this may be learning how to participate in a classroom environment, while for others, this may be learning how to listen and ask questions. A client’s treatment plan may include objectives such as:
- Improving the ability to listen and ask questions
- Increasing the aptitude for verbal communication
- Reducing maladaptive behaviors and encouraging positive replacement behaviors
- Improving adaptability
- Supporting learning, including Incidental Language Learning and Generalized Imitation
- Building fine and gross motor skills
A Learner-Based Approach
After a certified health practitioner confirms that the client is eligible to participate in an applied behavior analysis therapy program, they will be matched with a team of BCBAs or BCaBAs and trained Interventionists. Together, they will work together to form and execute a treatment plan based on the individual’s needs and current skill levels. Since no two clients are alike, each treatment plan will include unique goals and focuses. The Behavior Interventionist will work one-on-one with the child, while the parents or caregivers will also receive training on how best to implement the plan.
