Sean Corey is our Director of Operations (and General Counsel). That means he’s really organized, really smart, and really key to everything we do. Why don’t you take five minutes and get to know him a bit better. We guarantee there’s at least one thing in his story that’s sure to surprise you.
- How long have you been at VBA? I’ve been with VBA since August 2016…so almost 4 years now.
- What about VBA inspires you? VBA’s mission is inspiring, but what keeps me motivated on a daily basis is the commitment and dedication of our team. I regularly see VBA staff and managers going out of their way to solve problems for clients and to assist other team members. We have each other’s backs.
- What in your personal life inspires you? I’m inspired by the simple things in my daily life that keep me centered. For example, I take my dog to the park most days, make dinner with my neighbors several times each week, and go for long bike rides on the weekend.
- What is the most challenging aspect about your role? The most challenging situations are maintaining supportive and positive relationships when dealing with the issues that families and service providers experience.
- What do you like the most about your position and the least? I really enjoy spending time with our team and working on problems together. Working remotely over the last several months has been very difficult because it makes that teamwork much more challenging.
- If you weren’t at the office, what would you be doing instead? Hopefully walking my dog in the park or riding my bike on a back road in North County.
- How do you define success? For me, success is believing in what you do while still being able to live in the moment and enjoy yourself.
- What three books would we find on your bookshelf at home? “Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut, “Skinny Legs and All” by Tom Robbins, and “The Power of Myth” by Joseph Campbell.
- How has outside knowledge or experiences prepared you for this role? As a lawyer, I had to deal with many situations where I had to quickly understand a complex practical problem and develop an efficient way to resolve it. At VBA we are often confronted with logistical problems that require new solutions and procedures right away.
- If you could pick one person to travel the world with, who would it be and why? I would say David Chang because I love to explore new places and eat what the locals eat. It would be a great opportunity to learn and it would be a ton of fun.
- Who is your personal hero and why? My grandfather was my personal hero growing up. He was caring and patient but also made fun of how absurd life can be. He didn’t take himself or the world too seriously. I learned first from his example that the most important thing is to be kind.
